1937 | masacre
Monte Cristi
This is a sketch of a project I want to develop further.
This video showcases a general landscape of Monte Cristi and tows that borders with Fort-Liberte, Haiti.
In 1937, a dark episode of Dominican history colored the rivers of the frontier dark red with the blood of thousands (to be exact over 30K)) of innocent people of Haitian descent, but also any dark skin Dominican that would happen to come across a machete in the wrong moment.
This project aims to reflect on the Massacre del Perejil event through a lens of healing. I will utilize some archival material to depict a more accurate social and political landscape of the moment, overlapped with images captured on my first trip to Monte Cristi.
After stepping into this town, which at its glorious times was the home to people like Maximo Gomez and Jose Martí, it felt like time had forgotten about it, but I want to remember.
